Notable Women of 2011

Interesting conversation with my daughter last night. She is boycotting everything BBC.com related. I wasn’t sure if she expected me to ask why or just let her rant. So, I listened and then I was the one who ranted! I was just as much, if not more, offended than she was!

The BBC’s list of Faces of the Year – the women includes British pop singer Adele, Pippa Middleton (sister-in-law to Prince William), Kelsey de Santis (for her date with Justin Timberlake) and Sweetie the Panda. A panda?!? Really?? Also named was Spain’s Duchess of Alba, 85, for marrying a 61 year-old civil servant. To be fair, there were women worth mentioning and I’ll let you peruse their list at your leisure.

What about the women who were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work?” Or the 10,000 Egyptian women who marched “through central Cairo demanding Egypt’s ruling military step down in an unprecedented show of outrage over soldiers who dragged women by the hair and stomped on them, and stripped one half-naked in the street?”    Or the countless number of women who supported their loved ones through the economic recession so deeply felt by so many families globally. Or Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel who is one of the few women to be recognized for her leadership ability rather than what she wears, what she does and/or who she does it with!

I did find another list by Barbara Lee posted on the Huffington Post that acknowledges and celebrates the accomplishments of women. There should be more lists like hers.
